Funding transnational collaborative research through joint transnational calls is one of the major objectives of E-Rare. This is the most important and effective joint activity to enhance the cooperation between European scientists working on rare diseases and thus reducing the fragmentation of research in this field. E-Rare launches calls on a yearly basis. The topic and eligibility criteria are specified every year and therefore may vary from one call to the other.

4th JOINT CALL FOR EUROPEAN RESEARCH PROJECTS ON RARE DISEASES (JTC 2012) (Driven by young investigators)

4th JOINT CALL FOR EUROPEAN RESEARCH PROJECTS ON RARE DISEASES (JTC 2012) (Driven by young investigators)

GENERAL INFORMATION

The aim of the call was to provide young, independent investigators the opportunity of building transnational collaborations in the field of rare disease research.

Ten countries from the European Research Area are joining this call: Austria, Belgium (Flanders), France, Germany, Israel, The Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Spain and Turkey.

Transnational research proposals must have covered at least one of the following areas:

  • Definition of new nosological entities, epidemiological studies, genotype/phenotype correlations, natural history of diseases
  • Characterisation of the genetic/molecular basis of specific diseases
  • Pathophysiological and genetic studies of rare diseases
  • Diagnostic and therapeutic research (interventional clinical trials are excluded).

The process included a two-step submission and evaluation procedure. In the first step a total of 82 pre-proposals were submitted of which 76 were eligible. After careful examination by the Scientific Evaluation Committee (SEC), 36 pre-proposals were selected for full submission. Each of the full proposals was then evaluated by at least two additional external experts whose reviews were sent to project coordinators in order to give them the opportunity of studying the assessments and commenting on experts' arguments and evaluations. Both inputs were taken into account in a second SEC meeting.

Following the second SEC evaluation and ranking of the best projects, 11 consortia with a foreseen budget of about 9 Mio € were selected for funding. The funded projects cover a wide range of rare diseases including hematologic, metabolic, neurologic and dermatologic diseases as well as congenital malformations while addressing potential therapeutic options using state-of-the-art techniques like pluripotent stem cells, gene therapy and customized animal models.

More information on the Aims, the Topics, and the Application and Evaluation procedures can be found in the Call documents (see the "Downlaod documents" section).
